Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between research-grade and cosmetic-grade bee venom?
Research-grade bee venom is produced under stricter purity requirements, with additional testing and more labor-intensive processing. It is often chosen for laboratory and scientific work where maximum consistency is required. Cosmetic-grade material is suitable for skincare formulations such as creams, serums, and lotions. The higher demands on research-grade production are reflected in its price.
2. How is bee venom powder collected?
We use a bee-friendly collection method. Bees are gently stimulated to release small amounts of venom onto a glass plate without harm. Afterwards they return to their normal activity, ensuring colony health and sustainability. This non-destructive approach contrasts with methods where bees are killed for their venom sacs.
3. What is the INCI name for bee venom powder?
The INCI name is BEE VENOM. For details, see INCI name of bee venom.
4. How long can I store bee venom powder?
Bee venom powder should be kept tightly sealed, dry, and protected from light. According to our Safety Data Sheet:
- Short-term: 25–30 °C for up to 3 weeks
- Medium-term: 4 °C for up to 3 months
- Long-term: -20 °C for up to 5 years
For maximum stability, freezer storage is recommended.
5. Is it better to use live bees or a bee venom solution kit?
Live bees may be accessible if you work with a beekeeper, but this method results in the bee’s death since the stinger cannot be removed without harming it. A bee venom solution kit provides a controlled way to handle measured amounts of venom without using live bees. It also allows material to be prepared in advance and stored under proper conditions.
6. What is the shelf life of bee venom solution after mixing?
When stored at 2–4 °C, mixed bee venom solution can typically be kept for up to 60 days. The solution is sensitive to UV light, oxygen, and repeated freeze–thaw cycles, which may reduce stability.
7. How much bee venom solution corresponds to one bee sting?
Approximate equivalence studies suggest that 0.3 ml of reconstituted solution is comparable to a single bee sting. Some loss occurs during filtration and liquefaction, and smaller vials tend to degrade faster. For long-term consistency, storage in tightly sealed vials at recommended temperature is advised.
8. What solvent can I use to dissolve bee venom powder in a research project?
Distilled water or PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) are commonly used. The exact choice depends on the specific research application and should follow your laboratory’s protocols.
9. How many mg of bee venom is in one average sting from a honeybee?
Most studies indicate that 1 gram of dried bee venom corresponds to about 10,000 bee stings, meaning one sting contains ~0.1 mg. Other studies suggest closer to 7,000 stings per gram (~0.14 mg per sting). The exact value can vary slightly depending on bee species and conditions.
10. How many mg of venom does a sting from a wasp contain?
A wasp’s venom sac contains around 50 mg of venom. A single sting typically delivers about 10–15 mg, and a wasp can sting multiple times. We do not supply wasp venom, but this information is included due to frequent customer inquiries.
